Bruce Lee once said, “I fear not the man who has practised 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practised one kick 10,000 times.” Practising any form of sports requires meticulous practice. However, to gain the number one position in an online gaming tournament requires both skillset and practice, and the recent pandemic gave us plenty of time to hone our skill set.
Gaming is one of the fastest evolving industries:
The post-pandemic economic stability has given a boost to the Indian market creating an open space for proliferating industries to become an integral part of the Indian economy. The gaming industry was one of the fastest evolving sectors to achieve its peak during the lockdown. In recent times, one can witness a level of stability in the sector about changes in the socio-economic conditions of the society, leading to changes in the government regulations and framework. Irrespective of the obstacles, the industry is aimed to hit 3 billion by 2025 (AIGF report) and is expected to outgrow the anticipated numbers. This gradual movement will help in generating higher revenues for the Indian market. Another tangent is the further advancement in technology creating more secured and stricter security for the gameplay framework, and ease of financial transactions leading to the faster withdrawal of winning money. While addressing the market status of the gaming industry, one must note the new employment opportunities provided to ensure a totalitarian approach towards players. According to sources (AIGF report), the industry already employs 40,000 people and is expected to reach around 2 lakhs by 2025, giving people a chance to earn more by utilizing their time and skills.
Gaming as a skill:
Games of skill incorporate psychological techniques such as mathematical probabilities, bluffing, game theory, and more that make players use their skills and presence of mind to play the hand. While mastering the psychological aspects of the skill gaming, many experts also suggest restructuring in the format to allow fluidity to capture the essence of gaming intelligence and explore the vast possibilities it brings to the table. As the gaming industry is becoming immersive, more interactive, social, and affordable, it allows players to engage more with the gaming ecosystem.
Talking about the ecosystem, the mapping of the game is purely based on the psychological reading of the player’s playing pattern. The art behind creating any regulated gameplay is to read through the reactions of its users towards the secured game format. According to the KPMG report, it is studied that professional gamers spend their time strategizing, building reflexes, strengthening memory, and estimating risk-return while interacting with the game. The very belief of ‘online gaming is harmful to an individual and is the root cause of not letting young minds explore the exciting and engaging nature of the gaming industry. Relationships built with other gamers while playing could be as meaningful as offline relationships.
A study conducted by AIGF titled “Online gaming is a life skill” reveals that players playing together as a team online have developed a closer bond over offline colleagues or friends. 56 per cent of gamers said they were more likely, to be honest with their gaming teammates than their work colleagues.
Gaming as an art:
Online gaming is the only art form that exists in the digital space as it combines the requisites of arts and science discipline. It includes many forms of traditional art expression- right from designing the 3D forms of illustrations, the character or an object description, narration arcs, and the thematic music. Online gaming allows the player to personalize the artistic experience by retaining the authority of a character or an object. Gaming usually offers three distinct voices: the inventor or the creator of the game, the flowchart or the trajectory of the game, and the navigation of the player. Though the player has to abide by the rules of the game, but can always carve their journey and personalize it. Therefore, gaming can also be viewed as an art.
The sector is advancing at such a pace which has resulted in the exploration of multiple avenues in terms of jobs profiles; for instance, data analytics, UX/UI for real-life graphics designers, courses to learn poker to become professional e-gamers on a contract basis. The companies learn various processes and understand what works and what would not work for them to establish a kind of comfort and relevance to the gamers as it sets their way of thinking and response in a pattern. Irrespective of the objections faced by different states over the regulatory issues, the science and art behind creating online skill-based games is an interesting topic to study in-depth.
